Podcasts - Past, Present, and Future

5 Speed Cassette (5SC) - Website -

It all started here. Back in September of 2004 I started the 5 Speed Cassette Podcast as a way to bring three sports, Formula 1 - World Rally Championship - Pro Cyling, to the US. Boy did I have it wrong. Before I knew it I had people from all over the world emailing which made me quickly realize, my little show was now world wide. I also realized that I wasn't just podcasting to people who might be interested in what I was talking about. No, I was talking to people who were passionate fans of all three sports and would let me know if I got anything about their sport wrong. I also recieved tons of support and even gained a partner for the Formula1 season. Enter Steve Robertson from the UK. Ok to be more specific, Essex England. Steve joins me after every Formual1 race to share with us his unique European view on the lastest race results. After receiving plenty of positive feedback we knew we were onto something that people liked.

What is a podcast? Podcasting is the art and science of creating a radio like show in mp3 format for others to download from the web automatically. Before we go any further, you do not need an ipod to listen to my show. Any device that plays mp3 files will play my show. For a more detailed look into podcasting please see the Wikipedia entry

The motto for the show is simple and to the point:
"A show designed to improve your shifting performance between Pro Cycling, the World Rally Championship, Formula 1 racing, Independent (RIAA free) music and random events. Titanium components were used to ensure that subject matter will never fail due to shifting social pressure."

The 5 Speed Cassette podcast prides itself on being a family friendly and work safe show which means there will be no swearing or adult content of any kind. Mind you there will be alot of talk about engines and tires and other such things designed by adults but like I said, nothing bad. During the show I also like to play a song by an independent artist to give you something other then my voice to listen too and give you a chance to hear music that isn't on typical repeat radio. Shows are released on Tue and Friday of every week and are normally ready when life permits. Comments, questions and complaints regarding any part of the show can be sent too:

By the way every now and again we also break out of the typical studio recorded show and go live. Our best live show to date had live coverage from the US National Cyclo-Cross championships in Providence, RI which included an interview with Chris Horner. Could we score an even bigger name in the near future remains to be seen.

I would also like to mention that I am part of the N.E. England Podcasting group. Basically it's a bunch of podcasters from either MA, RI, Conn, NH, VT, and Maine so if you really dig my Boston accent and want to hear more, head on over to the site and have a listen.

Last but not least, if you're an independent artist/band who would like to have some of your music played during the show please don't hesitate to drop me an email. Why do I play independent artists instead of mainstream ones? Easy, because most if not all independent artist continue to create music because they love to do it. Not because some big executive has told them it's time because his spread sheet says so. Because of this freedom independent artists are free to express themselves how ever they see fit. I also personally believe that some of the most talented people in the world are not the one's with recording contracts (*cough Britney) but the one's you may never hear of. By playing their songs on my show I provide free advertisement for their work and in return I avoid the outrageous fees associated with mainstream radio. In the end everyone wins.

Alien Theater Radio (ATR)-

Where oh where do I begin? Lets go back to the beginning. ATR was created because I kept getting feedback from my 5 Speed Cassette listeners that wanted more of the music that I was playing. After getting over the initial shock of this idea I created ATR. The show focused on Instrumental and Progressive Rock Music. Think Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Rush. The name for the show actually comes from two different albums and one band name. Alien came from Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien and Steve Vai's Alien Love Secrets and Theater came from, you guessed it, Dream Theater. During the show's initial run I got to meet some incrediably talented musicians which I was proud to play on my show. Well we ran into a little problem which wasn't actually a problem but the showed ended up shutting down. Listen to the archive shows if you want details.

Don't own an mp3 player? Not a problem. Go to Podnova.com where you can listen to podcasts using only your computer. Speakers required, obviously. ;-)

So time goes by and one day I notice that people are still downloading the old shows. I'm shocked again but think nothing of it. Then I start hearing from artists who want their music featured on the show. I'm even more shocked but I turn them away after explaining what happen to the show. About a year or two goes by and people continue to download the show. Sometimes 600 to 800 unique downloads per archived show. I move passed shock and completely freak out while on the way to down right awe. -What is going on?-were my exact words. How could my little music podcast still be so popular? Then it hits me. It's because the artists that I was proud to meet were so darn talented that people couldn't get enough of them. So I sent out an email to as many artists and former listeners as I could find in my email archives asking if I should bring back the show. The response was an overwhelming, DO IT. So ATR is back with one small variation. There will be no set release schedule. With two small children and another podcast that has a somewhat set release schedule, I just can't do it.

So if you're an artist/band who would like to have your music played on ATR, please send me an email to: atrfeedback(at)gmail(dot)com. All I need is written permission (email works perfectly) and a music file of some kind that I can stick into Audacity. The show is work safe and family friendly so no adult words and such will be allowed. As always thanks for listening.

????????????? (???)

What's this you say? Why do you have a place marker for another show? You never had a third show!

Let's say that maybe, just maybe I am currently in talks, and in the works, with a fellow runner about an idea that both of us have. So I set this area aside just in case we happen to launce a new show. But then again I could just be just talking out loud. Then again rumors have it that there may be a nearly completed intro and logo. But don't hold your breath or anything.

I guess you'll just have to wait and see, or should I say hear? ;-)
